Анотація. У статті проведено аналіз наукової літератури, в якій досліджується посттравматичний стресовий розлад (ПТСР) як нове соціальне та історичне явище в США та країнах Північноатлантичного альянсу. Зокрема, було розглянуто значення ПТСР для суспільств країн НАТО в контексті їхнього розвитку протягом сучасного історичного періоду. Досліджується роль ветеранських правозахисних груп у формуванні суспільного розуміння та професійного визнання ПТСР. Вивчаючи ширший соціально-історичний контекст, який сприяв більшому визнанню і розумінню ПТСР, висвітлено складну взаємодію між політичними, економічними і соціальними силами, які формували розвиток і сприйняття ПТСР в США та країнах НАТО протягом зазначеного періоду часу. Підкреслюється важливість всебічного розуміння ПТСР як соціального та історичного явища для формування поінформованої політики і підтримки постраждалих осіб.
